Surbung Hill

A new airport in Surbungtlang, Falam, Chin State with a runway of 10,000 feet (3248 meters) by 200 feet wide, is in the works by the Union government according to Mr. Tin Naing Tun, Director General of the Transport Ministry’s Civil Aviation Department. The Falam airport is scheduled to be completed by 2016 to cope with anticipated flood tide of tourists to Chin State, Myanmar.

A survey group led by U Thant Zaw Moe from Myanmar Airline together with seven engineers, arrived in Surbungtlang of Falam District on 24 October 2012 to make a three-day survey of the area, which is about 6 miles from downtown Falam. The Local construction committee includes; Chin State Transport Minister Dr. Ngun San Aung, Attorney Kap Tial, several Hluttaw representatives and some local leaders.

Formerly the Surbungtlang served as a resupply airfield for the British forces during World War II.  The new airport is to be on top of a mountain that is seven miles long and three miles wide. The project is great for the area because Chin State, remains the only state in the country that doesn't have an airport. Kalaymyo airport and Sittwe airport are used by Chin people for air travel. Travellers can fly directly to Chin State in the nearest Future.

Myanmar now has three international airports; Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw. It has 33 regional airports in operations and there are plans to turn the management of airports over to private firms. Only 11 of them had runways over 10,000 feet (3248 meters). Of the 11, only Yangon International Airport and Mandalay International Airport had adequate facilities to handle larger jets.

Just 24 international airlines fly Myanmar while there are seven airlines operating domestically. Myanmar had a total of 73 airports, 36 of them - with paved runways and another 38 Airports - with unpaved runways according to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.

Smaller or less-developed airports—which represent the vast majority in the world—often have a single runway shorter than 3,300 feet (1,000 m). Larger airports for airline flights generally have paved runways 6,600 ft. (2,000 m) or longer. Many small airports have dirt, grass, or gravel runways, rather than asphalt or concrete.

The longest public-use runway in the world is at Qamdo Bangda Airport in China. It has a length of 18,045 ft. (5,500 m). The world's widest paved runway is at Ulyanovsk Vostochny Airport in Russia and is 344 ft. (105 m) wide.

The second largest airport in the country, it is located in Mingaladon, at (9.3 mi) north of downtown Yangon. Designed by the Airport Development Division of CPG Corporation of Singapore and constructed by Asia World, a leading Burmese construction firm, at a cost of US$13.3 million, the new terminal can handle 900 arriving and 900 departing passengers simultaneously. The airport was built on the former World War II airfield RAF Mingaladon in 1947 by the Calcutta Metropolitan Airports Authority. Once regarded as the best in Southeast Asia, the airport fell into disrepair and was for decades dilapidated and antiquated.

Meanwhile, Yangon International Airport will be upgraded to handle up to 6 million passengers annually up from 2.7 million passengers. Built on 405 hectares the airport handled slightly less than 500,000 visitors in 2012 but that figure will peak at 6 million in 2017 if tourism forecasts are accurate.

Built before World War II as Myitkyina Airfield, the airfield was captured by the Imperial Japanese Army on 8 May 1942 during the Japanese conquest of Burma. During the occupation, it was used by the Japanese Air Force as a fighter base, attacking Allied aircraft flying "the Hump" transport supply missions between India and China. The airfield was attacked on numerous missions by Tenth Air Force and Royal Air Force fighter and bombers until being driven from the Myitkyina area by Merrill's Marauders (officially named the 6th Ranger Battalion-5307th Composite Unit (provisional)) on 17 May 1944. Once in Allied hands, the 3d Combat Cargo Group moved in with C-47 Skytrains and used Myitkyina as a combat resupply airfield, air-dropping pallets of supplies and ammunition to the advancing Allied forces on the ground. In January 1945, the 80th Fighter Group flew P-47 Thunderbolts from the field until 24 May 1945. The 1st Combat Cargo Group then moved in with C-47s and remained until August when elements of the 4th Combat Cargo Group replaced them. The 4th CCG operated supply and passenger flights between the airfield and China until December 1945 when American forces pulled out of the area at the end of the war.
